In May 2010, Artists Jean-Pierre Roy and Michael Kagan hosted an unusual exhibition in their Brooklyn studio. Open to all artists who wanted to participate, “Single Fare” placed one constraint on the creative process: all work had to be submitted on a used MetroCard. Inspired by the notion that the city’s subways and buses allow for a kind of creative interchange unmatched in human history, “Single Fare” sought to create a unique art event where art and artists could come together to form a monumental event made from a tiny, innocuous piece of plastic: The MetroCard! The resulting exhibition featured over 700 works of art – from artists as far away as New Zealand and as close as the studio next door.

Following the tremendous success of last year’s “Single Fare,” Roy and Kagan are pleased to team up with Sloan Fine Art on the Lower East Side for “Single Fare 2: Please Swipe Again.” The themes of last year’s show ran the gamut from moments of High Abstraction to Delicate Portraiture. Three-dimensional works, documentary photography and even a video installation helped to create one of the most cohesively diverse shows in recent memory while playfully challenging artists to show what they can do with seven square inches.

While serving as a democratizing vehicle for artists of all ages and disciplines, the Single Fare exhibition also served as a fantastic platform to introduce beginning collectors to an amazing array of work while inviting the committed collector to connect to artists that might normally fall under their radar. Sloan Fine Art represents an exciting step forward for the Single Fare experience and while the exhibition will remain true to its roots, it will benefit from additional exhibition days and regular gallery hours. Please swipe again, and join us as we take a ride into the city!

Listen Up! Look Out!

Just a reminder that even though the opening is over, Single Fare is still going strong! There are hundreds of beautiful pieces left on the walls looking for a home, like this one by Amber Mühlhäußer. We are open through Wednesday night, 12-6 so shake the trees and get your people come out!

SINGLE FARE 2010 Opening Party

We were thrilled with the turn out for the opening party. The studio was packed for eight hours straight. When we checked at around 9pm there were already over 250 sold metrocards.

Post Opening ReCap!

The opening was a huge success! We were slammed with people from 4pm until we closed at midnite. A rash of red dots peppered themselves across the wall as the evening wore on and people from all over the city shared a great night of beautiful, tiny art. Thanks so much for coming out and don't forget that we are still open from 12-6 until Wednesday the 12th!

Ground Control to Major Kagan

You know you are looking at a Michael Kagan painting when the brush marks pack just as much energy as a space rocket blasting off. In fact, Michael has been working on large scale paintings of space this past year. He’s wielded daringly thick and juicy brushwork into astronauts, rockets, moon buggies and other space hardware. And now, he’s packed the galaxy into seven square inches! No easy feat to pull off, but not as difficult as the first space walk. Come take a ride to the final frontier on Michael’s single fare metro cards this weekend.

Christian Johnson

Christian Johnson is a Renaissance man.... he is an accomplished painter, sculptor, draftsman, and print maker, and he also likes to compose some classical music on the piano on the side.

Christian works in a variety of mediums and sizes. For Single Fare he had to go really small. To accomplish this he first created drawings on on his large digital Wacom tablet, he then printed them small enough to fit on the metrocard. Christian then took it a step further and drew on top of the digital prints he made.

Christian says this about the series:

"Since commuting deals with so much repetition, I thought I would work with that and find different ways to make the repetitive seem interesting."

Paging Dr. Rome

Justin Rome is not only a skilled doctor specializing in Ophthalmology... he is also an accomplished photographer. Look for his series of 4 metrocards at Single Fare.

Isabella Garbani

Isabella Garbani sent us a really cool MetroCard. She used an old plastic bag to cover the card and endedup with a great and unusal transparent surface! You have to see it in person to for the full effect, so don't forget to come to the opening!

Jason Bereswill Goes Down

Jason Bereswill sent us this beautiful image of underwater adventure yesterday. Jason loaded his card with five dollars AND left the magnetic swipe uncovered. His one of a kind MetroCard painting is also... (drum roll) a Double Fare!!!! Thanks, Jason!
