Single Fare 2 has come and gone. It was a bigger success than we could ever have imagined. We want to thank all of the talented, imaginative and passionate artists that made the show what it was. The show's success was because of you all and we were proud of every single piece we put on the wall. We hope to see you, and a whole new group of MetroCartists, next year with all new amazing and inspiring work!

We also wanted to thank all the hard working people that made this show happen. First off:

Alix- You are amazing. Everything that could have happened, did, and you handled it all with grace and style. Can't wait to do it again. We love you.

Jason and Jane- Our stalwart neighbors. Without you both the show would lack some of it's best work, but more importantly, it would lack a hefty chunk of the kind of spirit that makes putting the show together such a joy for us.

Jackie- Our secret weapon. You put your head down and bite down on the reigns and ride straight into the night to get the job done. All that, and bad-ass with the ole brush and paints to boot.

Johnnie and Anthony- To most: the guys behind the counter. To us: the guys behind the running of the show. Without you both, this thing never would have gotten off the ground or landed as safely as it did. You are both in our hearts and we owe you more than we could give.

Justin- You sweated it out with us during the epic 16 hour hanging, you blew art lovers away with your 3D metrocards, and you helped the opening be a great one by working the whole time and selling cards. A serious trifecta and a serious help throughout the week of Single Fare.

We want to thank all of the artists who so generously donated work to the Charity Raffle. Your contributions made this show something really special and helped us take the entire Single Fare experience to the next level. We wish to thank: Julie Heffernan, Ali Benisadr, Jane LaFarge Hamill, Jason Bereswell, Alyssa Monks, Eric White, Christian Johnson, Alex Kanevsky, Peter Drake and Dean Monogenis.

To the myriad of current Academy students, friends, partners and significant others (too many to name or keep track of, sorry!) that stopped by to help for a few hours or just a few cards to help us get the job done- Thank you so much! We couldn't have done it without you. Your good cheer brought us through the dark times and made the good times brighter! You might be unnamed, but not forgotten!

John Jacobsmeyer- from the very beginning your enthusiasm has really embodied the spirit of Single Fare maybe more than anyone else. From the inventiveness of your Single Fare metrocards to your wonderful support of the show, you are at the very heart of the Single Fare community: your passionate commitment to your own work is only matched by your support of, and interest in, everyone else's work.

Lastly, a special shout-out goes to Peter and Janice. Peter, the quality of your work is only transcended by the level of support and dedication that you and Janice have always so generously shown for the show, it's work, it's artists, and it's founders. Christian Johnson Cooks Up Something Special

Christian Johnson is an amazing painter, draftsman, sculptor and also one hell of a printmaker. I was very curious to see which one of his skills he would be using this year in Single Fare 2. For the show Christian made a very special edition of linocuts on metrocards.... they are simply amazing. There will be two sets of 12 in the show. One set will be in the main gallery... so you better get there early if you want one. The second set will also be at the gallery... but we have something a little special planned for those.

Katrina Nails IT!

Charis Carmichael Braun, another repeat Single Fare rider, gives a glimpse of an amazing project she was involved in with her Church and the Sure Foundation. Made on over 400 metrocards, the piece was done as part of the Sure Foundation's 10th anniversary. This "Fellowship Mosaic" artwork was created as a celebration of the faith, community, and life of the Sure Foundation.

In May 2010, Artists Jean-Pierre Roy and Michael Kagan hosted an unusual exhibition in their Brooklyn studio. Open to all artists who wanted to participate, “Single Fare” placed one constraint on the creative process: all work had to be submitted on a used MetroCard. Inspired by the notion that the city’s subways and buses allow for a kind of creative interchange unmatched in human history, “Single Fare” sought to create a unique art event where art and artists could come together to form a monumental event made from a tiny, innocuous piece of plastic: The MetroCard! The resulting exhibition featured over 700 works of art – from artists as far away as New Zealand and as close as the studio next door.

Following the tremendous success of last year’s “Single Fare,” Roy and Kagan are pleased to team up with Sloan Fine Art on the Lower East Side for “Single Fare 2: Please Swipe Again.” The themes of last year’s show ran the gamut from moments of High Abstraction to Delicate Portraiture. Three-dimensional works, documentary photography and even a video installation helped to create one of the most cohesively diverse shows in recent memory while playfully challenging artists to show what they can do with seven square inches.

While serving as a democratizing vehicle for artists of all ages and disciplines, the Single Fare exhibition also served as a fantastic platform to introduce beginning collectors to an amazing array of work while inviting the committed collector to connect to artists that might normally fall under their radar. Sloan Fine Art represents an exciting step forward for the Single Fare experience and while the exhibition will remain true to its roots, it will benefit from additional exhibition days and regular gallery hours. A rash of red dots peppered themselves across the wall as the evening wore on and people from all over the city shared a great night of beautiful, tiny art. Christian Johnson

Christian Johnson is a Renaissance man.... he is an accomplished painter, sculptor, draftsman, and print maker, and he also likes to compose some classical music on the piano on the side.

Christian works in a variety of mediums and sizes. For Single Fare he had to go really small. To accomplish this he first created drawings on on his large digital Wacom tablet, he then printed them small enough to fit on the metrocard. Christian then took it a step further and drew on top of the digital prints he made.

Christian says this about the series:

"Since commuting deals with so much repetition, I thought I would work with that and find different ways to make the repetitive seem interesting."

An Act of Inspiration

Last year Imogen Slater, a student of mine at the New York Academy of Art, came to a homework crit with a slightly guilty look on a her face. The project I'd given was to do a small self-portrait everyday for two weeks. Don't get too precious with them, I said. Be bold and accurate, but don't be timid. Asking to see what she had done, I watched Imogen take a small envelope from behind her back as she sheepishly replied, "I'm really sorry, but I've been sick for the past week and couldn't leave the house to get any surfaces to work on.... So I painted them on old MetroCards."

Out came the portraits, and the seed of "Single Fare" was planted. Imogen's little paintings beautifully transformed her own image while transcending the MetroCard's utilitarian purpose into something curious and wonderful. Art, on a very basic level, is just a visual document of the way the artist views the world and we hope that you join us in sharing your world with us on this most common of surfaces.

We will be posting a selection of the images for the "Single Fare" Show as we receive them to whet your appetites and to get your creative juices flowing.

Since its founding in the 17^th century, New York City has been one of world’s most prolific producers of global culture and a witness to some of humanity’s most profound events. Art, Music, Finance, Politics and the never-ceasing wave of cultural overlap and transfusion truly make this city a profound experience for anyone passing through its gates. For over 100 years, amidst the chaos, the cacophony, and the change, the city has one constant that has linked its many geographical and cultural extremities… Its Public Transportation.

Join artists Jean-Pierre Roy and Michael Kagan as they celebrate one of the most ubiquitous icons of the NYC landscape, the MetroCard, in “Single Fare”. Open to all artists who want to participate, “Single Fare” places one constraint on the creative process: all work must be submitted on a used MetroCard. Drawings, paintings and tiny sculpture will be on display in one of the greatest combinations of hand-made and found art that New York City has ever witnessed.

New York’s cultural institutions have always succeeded on the strength of their communities and the Art World is no different. While inspired by the notion that the city’s subways and buses allow for a kind a creative interchange unmatched in human history, “Single Fare” seeks to create an art event outside of the Standard Gallery Model where Art and Artists will come together to form a monumental event made from a tiny, innocuous piece of plastic: The MetroCard!

The event will take place on Saturday, May 8^th at 4pm until late. The artists’ studio at 224 Grand will be transformed into the “Single Fare” exhibition space through May 12^th. Send all MetroCards to 705 Driggs Ave # 3 Brooklyn, NY 11211 or drop them at the “Single Fare” Drop Box at 224 Grand st.
